A team of astronomers from Russia and the United States has spotted a dwarf galaxy, which is roughly 10,000 times lighter than the Milky Way. The galaxy dubbed KKs3, the dwarf spheroidal galaxy is approximately 7 million light-years away in the direction of the southern constellation of Hydrus. Its only the second-known dwarf spheroidal galaxy member discovered from the so-called Local Group of galaxies, which includes the Milky Way as well as the Andromeda Galaxy and dozens of other galaxies. The dwarf galaxy was found with the help of Hubble Space Telescopes Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). Dwarf galaxies are intriguing objects as they lack the gas and dust needed for new generations of stars to be created. These dwarfs are usually found orbiting larger galaxies. Since these galaxies are old, the stars are also very dim. This makes the detection these galaxies very difficult. Professor Dimitry Makarov, of the Special Astrophysical Observatory in Karachai-Cherkessia, Russia said, Finding objects like KKs3 is painstaking work, even with observatories like the Hubble Space Telescope. But with persistence, were slowly building up a map of our local neighbourhood, which turns out to be less empty than we thought. Astronomers believe this rare family of stars could help them to learn more about the Universe at large. From various flights, between Atlanta and New York...
